Enantioselective optical gradient forces using 3D structured vortex light

نویسندگان

چکیده

Here we highlight enantioselective optical gradient forces present in 3D structured vortex tweezing systems. One chiral force originates from the circular polarization of light, while remarkably other is independent input polarization, even occurring for unpolarized and not 2D light nor propagating plane waves. This latter sorting mechanism allows trapping particles into distinct rings transverse through conservative radial forces.

Detection of nanoparticles using optical gradient forces

We present a detection scheme for nanoscale particles based on the gradient force and torque near a tightly focused laser beam. The focus affects the path of nanoparticles passing by and a quadrant detector records the particle trajectory. A feedback system continuously adjusts the laser power and thereby prevents the particles from being trapped. Particle size and shape can be assessed by eval...

Enhancing optical gradient forces with metamaterials.

We demonstrate how the optical gradient force between two waveguides can be enhanced using transformation optics. A thin layer of double-negative or single-negative metamaterial can shrink the interwaveguide distance perceived by light, resulting in a more than tenfold enhancement of the optical force. This process is remarkably robust to the dissipative loss normally observed in metamaterials....

Nanoscopic control and quantification of enantioselective optical forces

Circularly polarized light (CPL) exerts a force of different magnitude on left- and right-handed enantiomers, an effect that could be exploited for chiral resolution of chemical compounds as well as controlled assembly of chiral nanostructures. However, enantioselective optical forces are challenging to control and quantify because their magnitude is extremely small (sub-piconewton) and varies ...
